On 26 February 2026, KANI trained 45 professionals in Lagos in digital productivity, automation and the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI). About 13 participants came from the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems. The one-day workshop, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and organised and facilitated by KANI, also taught the Japanese workplace principles of Kaizen and Horenso. Organisations can commission a similar programme.

What are Kaizen and Horenso?

Kaizen is the Japanese principle of continuous improvement: making small, steady changes that add up over time. Horenso is a Japanese workplace habit of reporting, informing and consulting, so that managers and colleagues hear about progress and problems early.

What did the workshop cover?

  • Using digital tools to work more efficiently.
  • Using artificial intelligence responsibly.
  • Applying Kaizen and Horenso to build efficient workplaces.

What happened on the day?

  • A JICA representative from Abuja gave opening remarks, and the KANI President addressed participants.
  • Participants worked in groups, and the winning group received gifts from the KANI President.
  • Every participant received a certificate of attendance.
  • The Guardian and Daily Independent covered the event.

How can your team apply Kaizen and Horenso?

This is general workplace practice, not part of KANI’s report. A simple way to start:

  1. Pick one routine process, such as how requests are logged.
  2. Make one small improvement and note the result (Kaizen).
  3. Report the change to your manager, inform the people it affects and consult them before the next change (Horenso).
  4. Repeat each month.
